Jason Abel

Founding Partner

Jason is an experienced advocate and trial lawyer. He represents individuals and businesses in a wide variety of matters, including complex litigation before juries, judges, and arbitrators throughout the United States and around the world. He also serves as outside general counsel for several companies, and he helped "write the book" on legal procedure as co-author of the ICLE Michigan Civil Procedure treatise.

Jason began his career at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, practicing commercial litigation and international law. Returning to Michigan in 2007, he joined Honigman LLP, where he was a litigation partner with a varied practice spanning commercial litigation, real property litigation, supply chain disputes, trusts and estates, and family law.

Jason formed Abel Hiller with Jim Hiller in 2025 to provide strategic, business-focused legal solutions with an unwavering commitment to exceptional client service.

Education

Jason received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and received the Alona E. Evans Award for best brief in the world in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from Williams College.

James Hiller

Founding Partner

With 50 years of experience as an attorney, counselor, and entrepreneur, Jim's legal and strategic guidance has been sought by clients worldwide: individuals, startups, private equity firms, and businesses seeking to scale and find success.

In addition to an accomplished legal career, Jim is the former President and CEO of Hiller's Markets, a chain of seven Michigan grocery stores sold to Kroger in 2015. Few attorneys can say they've sat on the client's side of the table for decades; Jim brings that operator's perspective to every engagement.

Jim has authored numerous articles on sailing and maritime law. A skilled navigator and ocean sailor, he has been a Fellow of The Royal Institute of Navigation for more than 30 years.

Education

Jim is a distinguished graduate of the University of Detroit Law School, where he was President of his class and recipient of the Outstanding Student Award.
